Advanced Forensic Studies

This is an exciting time to consider going back to school, in the sense of obtaining a college or advanced degree. The digital age is making online courses and degree programs more common — even Ivy League schools are making some of their classes available on the internet. At the same time, the diversification or specialization being offered by universities around the country makes the intense study of small subjects much more accessible. This means that students can enroll in online forensic programs that will allow them to study subjects like computer forensics, forensic anthropology, or forensic psychology.

Getting an advanced degree in these subjects can mean the difference between being stuck in the same job or being able to move up within a law enforcement agency or other criminal justice office. Promotions are sometimes the result of good work and loyalty, but more and more they are dependent upon candidates having at least a masters degree in some form of criminology or forensic specialization.

An example would be forensic psychology. Someone working in law enforcement with a general background in criminology will likely advance to a certain level and then get stuck. By obtaining a degree in forensic psychology they will learn to apply the principles of psychology to their work. With a masters degree they may be eligible for supervisory positions or able to transfer to departments that specialize in analyzing or predicting criminal behavior. Computer forensics, forensic anthropology, and forensic science are other advanced programs that can lead to career advancement or shift one’s career path within law enforcement.
