Logistics are the bane of travel planning. Instead of spending hours fantasizing about all the exotic sights, foods, and experiences ahead, travelers have to spend time researching hotels, transportation, and currency exchange systems. They will also need to make sure they have the proper travel documents and insurance for their trip. Unless they book themselves into a tour group that manages all the logistics for them, anyone heading overseas for vacation or work should budget plenty of planning time well in advance of their departure date.
There are, of course, numerous advantages to pre-planning. The most obvious is saving money. By planning ahead, travelers can lock in discount prices for a variety of things and insulate themselves from rising rates. They will be able to book airfares, reserve hotels, and hire cars as much as six months or a year ahead of time.
Another big advantage to planning ahead is peace of mind. There’s little risk that a hotel or flight will be full if it is booked months ahead of time. While a pre-planned trip looses a little in spontaneity, no one wants to be stranded in a foreign country without access to a car when their itinerary calls for a road trip to explore the countryside outside a major city.
